Amy Tan is the author of The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter's Daughter, The Opposite of Fate: Memories of a Writing Life, and two children's books, The Moon Lady and Sagwa, which has now been adapted as a PBS production. 1993: Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California. She is the second of three children born to Chinese immigrants, John and Daisy Tan. When she was fifteen years old, her father and older brother Peter both died of brain tumors within six months of each other. Amy Tan is known for her lyrically written (using flowing, melodic language) tales of emotional conflict between Chinese American mothers and daughters separated by generational and cultural differences.
